A Day in the Life of A Mini Farmer

Mini Farmers At Willows Farm Day Nursery & Pre-School

Life as a Mini Farmer is all about curiosity, adventure, and big discoveries in small moments. Every day at Willows is carefully shaped to help our little ones grow – through hands-on farm experiences, outdoor play, and calm, cosy moments indoors.

Our countryside setting gives children endless chances to dig, explore, wander, feed, cuddle, climb, create, and learn. Whether they’re visiting the animals, pottering around our gardens, or getting stuck into messy play, each moment is designed to build confidence, independence, and genuine joy.

What Makes a Mini Farmer?

A Mini Farmer is curious, confident, and always ready for adventure. At Willows, children learn by doing – feeding animals, splashing in puddles, digging in the garden, and discovering nature with all their senses.

Being a Mini Farmer means:
• Feeling at home in the great outdoors
• Learning through real-life experiences
• Building independence and resilience
• Caring for animals and understanding the world around them
• Making friends and growing through play
• Having the freedom to explore, create, and follow their interests

It’s a childhood rooted in fresh air, muddy boots, big imaginations, and the kind of hands-on learning that stays with them long after they leave the farm.

Here’s what a typical day looks like for a Willows Mini Farmer – full of fresh air, friendship, and a whole lot of muddy boots.

  1. Starting the Day

Mini Farmers arrive from St Albans, London Colney, and across North London to a big, cheerful welcome. Drop-off is calm and friendly — a quick chat with parents, a familiar face at the door, and a smooth start to the day.

Breakfast is our first cosy moment together. Children gather for a warm, social meal, easing into the morning with full tummies and big smiles.

  2. Morning Adventure

Once breakfast is done, it’s time to head out. Sun hats, waterproofs, wellies — whatever the weather calls for, our Mini Farmers are ready.

Mornings are packed with hands-on farm experiences: brushing ponies, helping muck out, wandering nature trails, or exploring the fields and gardens. The whole farm becomes their classroom, filled with space to imagine, move, and discover.

Children are grouped by their interests, so every morning adventure feels personal — guided by what lights them up.

  3. Midday Fuel

By lunchtime, everyone returns indoors for a hearty, two-course home-cooked meal made right here in our kitchen. It’s a moment to swap stories, relax together, and refuel for the next chapter of the day.

  4. Quiet Time

After a busy morning outdoors, children settle into peaceful routines. Some drift off for a nap, while others enjoy restful activities. This gentle pause helps rebalance their energy and prepares them for more exploring.

  5. Afternoon Exploration

Recharged and ready, our Mini Farmers head back out. The afternoons are full of bug hunts, plant discoveries, tractor rides, and cuddles with our guinea pigs.

They learn about the rhythms of farm life — moving hay, feeding animals, and exploring the seasonal trails across Willows Activity Farm. Every day brings something new to notice, touch, and understand.

  6. Winding Down

As the afternoon draws to a close, the children share a final tasty meal and chat about their day. They tidy up together, practising teamwork and responsibility, before settling in for a story from our Book of the Week.

It’s a warm, grounding end to a full day of play and adventure.

Every day at Willows Farm Nursery is filled with nature, learning, laughter, and moments worth remembering — the kind children can’t wait to tell you about on the way home.
